Here’s what you should know immediately about the updated version of Fallout 4.
We’ve outlined the major updates now in Fallout 4 due to Bethesda’s recent changes. These include improvements in graphics and technology, and even some new content. Be sure to look at our “Things to Do First” list in Fallout 4 if you’re starting the game with the next-gen patch for the first time.
Optimized for Current-Gen Consoles
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the original platforms for Fallout 4.
This new update upgrades the almost nine-year-old game to today’s standards with the next-gen update. Fallout 4 now offers 4K resolution on consoles, whether you select the new Quality or Performance mode.
The key difference is that Quality mode aims for 30 FPS at 4K resolution on ultra settings, without adjusting resolution dynamically. In contrast, Performance mode seeks 60 FPS at regular 4K resolution with dynamic resolution adjustments.
Additionally, if you use a 120Hz display, Quality mode will aim for 40 FPS, or it will aim for 60 FPS at 1440p resolution on ultra settings if connected to a 1440p display.
Keep in mind, console gamers can also use Console Commands and Cheats while playing on a PS5 or Xbox Series X.
A word of caution! The next-gen update is currently not accessible for players who have Fallout 4 via a PS Plus subscription. Nonetheless, Bethesda has announced that the update will be available for the PS Plus version soon, as they are working on a solution.
Squashing Bugs (for now).
On the topic of bugs, Bethesda has continued to fix game bugs almost ten years after its release. The update notes for Fallout 4’s next-gen version list many bug fixes, including problems with technology, saved games, locked missions, damaged assets, and more.
Yet, it seems the next-gen update has also brought some new issues, which we will keep an eye on as more time is spent with the update.

Updates for PC Players
Due to mods and generally superior performance, PC players of Fallout 4 have experienced a higher quality gameplay than console players even before the update. However, the next-gen update still offers new advantages to PC players.
With the new update, there is now official support for both wide and ultrawide screens. Additionally, the Fallout 4 Creation Kit has been updated and fixed to improve navigation and address bugs and crashes.
Wider Availability Across Platforms
Fallout 4 is now officially on the Epic Game Store and has earned a “Deck Verified” badge for Steam Deck. Personally, I didn’t have many problems playing Fallout 4 on Steam Deck previously, but this verification should make running the game on Valve’s handheld device easier than before.

More Missions and Equipment
The next-gen update for Fallout 4 includes more than just technical improvements. Bethesda’s update notes start with a detailed list of new equipment and missions accessible in The Commonwealth.
A new Enclave storyline, named Echoes of the Past, connects to a Fallout 3 storyline. Additionally, there are new weapons, Power Armor, and outfits for players to discover.
Two additional new quests, When Pigs Fly and All Hallow’s Eve, will also unlock further content from the Makeshift Weapon Pack, which features items like a Nail Gun and Baseball Launcher, along with Halloween-themed decorations for your settlement.
You can access IGN’s complete walkthrough and quest guide here to assist you with these new storylines.
These are the major updates in Fallout 4 due to the recent changes. For both existing and new players, this provides a fantastic opportunity to revisit Fallout 4, particularly following the success of the Fallout TV series.
What we think?
I think the next-gen update for Fallout 4 is really cool. The graphics will look amazing in 4K, and playing on new consoles like the PS5 sounds fun.
The update also fixes old bugs and adds new missions and gear, which makes the game even more exciting. I’m especially interested in the new Enclave storyline. It’s great that Bethesda keeps improving the game, making it better for both new and old players.
