Nintendo will not attend Gamescom 2024. This decision comes a year after the first leaks about the Switch 2 appeared online during the event.
“Gamescom is a central event in Nintendo’s event calendar,”
A representative from Nintendo of Europe spoke to Games Wirtschaft, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. “This year, however, after careful consideration, we decided against taking part in Cologne. Instead, players can try out the games for Nintendo Switch as part of other Germany-wide events.”
The announcement arrives as rumors suggest Nintendo may not have many new releases in 2024. Nintendo hasn’t yet shared its release schedule for the latter half of the year.
Its absence from Gamescom supports whispers that the next-generation follow-up to the Switch might be delayed until 2025.
Currently, the most significant game Nintendo is working on is Metroid Prime 4, which hasn’t been displayed since its initial reveal in 2017.
At the previous year’s event, Nintendo is said to have presented a demo to developers that was designed for the expected Switch 2 specifications, featuring Nvidia DLSS upscaling and ray tracing technology. Information about the demo quickly spread online, sparking discussions about its specifications.
Since then, not much more information has been shared, including if it will be a hybrid console or have Joycons. It is also unclear if it will support games from previous consoles.
Gamescom is scheduled to be held from August 21 to August 25 in Cologne, Germany.
What we think?
I think Nintendo skipping Gamescom 2024 is a big deal. It seems like they might not have new games to show, especially with rumors about the Switch 2 being delayed.
This makes me a bit sad because I was excited to see what’s next. Maybe they’ll focus on smaller events in Germany instead. I hope they share more about their plans and new games soon.
