Apple’s AirTag is an impressive small device designed to track items like luggage, cars, and purses. However, there’s a concern: just as you can conceal it, so can others. To tackle issues related to tracking without consent, AirTag will be updated with new functions soon.
According to 9to5Mac, there are mentions of warnings for item trackers from other companies. This is in line with Apple’s efforts last year, when it worked with Google to suggest a set of industry guidelines. The aim was to prevent the misuse of Bluetooth tracking devices.
The software hints that the Find My app will now detect tracking devices, not just AirTags. If it detects such a device, it will alert the iPhone user with a message – “This item isn’t certified on the Apple Find My network. You can disable this item and stop it from sharing its location with the owner. To do this, follow the instructions provided on a website by the manufacturer of this item”.
Currently, iPhone software can detect Bluetooth tracking devices, but only those approved by Apple. This is about to change, marking a significant advancement.
It’s likely not just by chance that Google revealed today its plan to start its own Find My Device network within the next three days, which means by Sunday, April 7, or Monday, April 8.
This was reported in the mail stating “With the new Find My Device network, you’ll be able to locate your devices even if they’re offline. You can also find any compatible Fast Pair accessories when they’re disconnected from your device. This includes compatible earbuds and headphones, and trackers that you can attach to your wallet, keys, or bike.”
The report suggests that Google delayed its network launch to allow Apple to add this security feature to iOS, which seems to have been included in iOS 17.5. This indicates that significant updates are coming to tracking devices soon.

I think this update is a big step for safety. Apple’s AirTag and other trackers are super useful for finding lost stuff. But it’s scary that someone could use them to track you without you knowing.
With this new update, your iPhone can tell you if there’s a tracker nearby that shouldn’t be there. It’s cool that it works with trackers from other companies, not just Apple’s.
This means we’ll be safer. Also, Google is starting something similar soon. It’s good to see big companies working to make sure these gadgets are used the right way.
