The game was released on consoles and PC several months ago.
Over the past year, Apple has been promoting the idea that the newest iPhones can offer a gaming experience similar to consoles, with top-quality games. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage is the latest game to test this claim. It now has an announced release date and price details.
Mirage is set to arrive on compatible iPhones—the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max—on June 6, says Ubisoft. However, the App Store shows June 10 as the release date.
This release is around the same time as Apple’s annual developer conference, where it’s likely to be mentioned. According to a post by Ubisoft, the game will also be available on the iPad Air and iPad Pro models that have an M1 chip or newer.
The game can be downloaded for free and includes a 90-minute trial. After the trial, it costs $50 to continue playing, similar to its price on PC and consoles. It offers cross-progression if you log into Ubisoft Connect.
While Ubisoft Connect isn’t very popular among players, it allows you to share your saved games across different platforms.
The cross-progression feature is important because the game was released on other platforms a few months ago. This means players who are interested might already have started or even finished the story.
Mirage is part of a long series, with many main games before it. However, it is a smaller and more concentrated game compared to the larger-scale games like Odyssey from 2018 and Valhalla from 2020.
Those games moved the series towards a larger, open-world RPG style similar to The Witcher 3, focusing less on stealth. Mirage returns to the original gameplay style. It began as extra content (DLC) for Valhalla but grew into a complete game.
Mirage is not the first major game for the iPhone 15, though only a few others have been available so far. The iPhone has versions of Resident Evil 4’s remake and Resident Evil Village.
Additionally, Apple has successfully introduced versions of No Man’s Sky, Death Stranding, and Baldur’s Gate 3 to its Macs with Apple Silicon.
In our tests of the Resident Evil games on the iPhone 15, the graphics and performance were impressive, similar to what you might see on a PlayStation 4 Pro, a mid-range gaming laptop, or a Steam Deck.
However, the touch controls were not as effective, making a physical controller a better choice. iOS is compatible with the latest controllers from PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo, as well as attachable ones like the Razer Kishi. Mirage will support these controllers as well.
What we think?
I think Assassin’s Creed Mirage on the iPhone 15 will look great and play smoothly. The game returns to the stealth style of earlier games, which I like. However, using touch controls might be tricky. It’s better with a controller.
I’m curious how it will compare to playing on a console or PC. It’s cool that you can start playing on one device and continue on another with cross-progression.
